We had to buy a new truck this summer - our second vehicle just got too old and had too many kilometers on it to make it worth while to keep on the road. We had some thoughts about someday purchasing a new camper for our family but thought that we might wait a few years.
Then, randomly this past week, we found the most perfect trailer for our family. So we jumped on the chance. It is exactly what we wanted and we can't wait for the summer and for all the fun memories that we get to make!

She's Five
Danica turned five last week. A chance to remember, to celebrate her birthday and my birth day. Time has marched on and my little girl is not so little anymore. Kindergarten, ringette and so many other things have started for her.
She is funny, smart and beautiful. She is lively, energetic and joy filled. My little gift...a blessing to celebrate not only on her birthday, but every day. Love this kid...

When Someone Shows You Who They Are...
I love Oprah. I don't always agree with her, but I truly enjoy the journey that she takes people on. She is one of the few celebrities that I respect - mostly for following her passion and using her God-given gifts to teach and help others. She has a new network - OWN - which has a bunch of great programs on it but one of them that I particularly enjoyed was her life lessons class.
She often talks about ah ha moments - I suppose I've had a few of those over the years, but recently, I had a serious one. I have always wanted to be liked, to be accepted, to be loved. It stems from things that happened in my childhood - things I don't really want to discuss here. Saying that however, there are blessings that come from trials - an incredibly close relationship with both of my parents - two people that I can tell absolutely anything to (and do) and also some measure of self-awareness.
But for years, I have struggled with not being good enough for some people. I try and try and try again in a variety of ways to make them like me, to treat me with respect and to be kind to me. And I get burned - again, again and again. And I get hurt - over and over. I continue to trust them, to show them pieces of myself and wind up getting stomped on.
Oprah shared in one of her life classes - when someone shows you who they are, believe them. Simple isn't it? When someone shares their love, their kindness and their joy with you, believe that. Trust in that. When someone shows you their spitefulness, their untruthfulness and their unkindness, believe that too. Why do I continue to put aside those that bring good things to my life and focus on those who do not? That is not to say that mistakes can't be made and forgiveness can't be offered. Ah ha. I get it - finally. And it has only taken me 35 years.
I received a card from a friend the other day. It was one of those cards that come at just the right time, that says just the right thing and lets you know that you are being thought about. It reminded me in a very real way that I am blessed. I have people in my life that accept me for me. Who love me, love my goodness and rebuke my faults with grace and mercy. Angels sent to me from up above.
I still choose to be kind to those who are unkind to me. I choose to forgive as I am forgiven. But I refuse to allow people into my space who have shown that they cannot be trusted with it - with me. Instead, I embrace those who have shown me who they are, and believe them. I believe in their goodness, their inner beauty and their light. And I am grateful - beyond words - to have finally learned this lesson. To be free from this burden that I have carried for so long. I'm sure I will still have days that I struggle with this issue, but the lesson has been learned and heard deep within my soul. I am enough, and if someone can't see that - it's actually okay because there are others who do see it.

Where to start...
A break was most definitely needed. Time to reflect and pray, time to sort out conflicting emotions and time to refocus on what was really important has been the center of my attention as of late. A good book, dear friends, close family and our pastor all provided necessary and much needed insight. And what have I learned? God's grace is sufficient. A good reminder and something to focus on in the upcoming months.
Time has been spent enjoying the last remaining bits of summer with our annual camping trip to St. Malo. We had the most beautiful weather and were basically bug free except for one evening when we ate dinner in the trailer to avoid the wasps that seemed to think our fajitas were delightful. We spent our days on the beach and our nights around a campfire under clear and starry skies. It was wonderful.
While we were gone, we learned that our second car was no longer worth fixing. We knew the end was coming, but I had hoped to get another twelve to eighteen months of driving time out of her. But after 12 years and 210,000 km, she had given her all and we donated her to Teen Challenge. That meant that it was time to start looking for a new vehicle and we wound up getting a great deal on this spectacular thing:
The big girls spent a week in a ringette camp and have started gearing up for another season. Both of them have been registered and will be on the same team this year. With Greg coaching and myself managing, we are looking forward to another great year out on the ice!
Emily started grade 2 - can you even believe it??? I know I can't. She has a wonderful class this year filled with great friends and the teacher that she was very much looking forward to having for the year.
Danica started kindergarten - holy cow how time flies! She was a bit nervous to go but in the end had a great day and did wonderfully when I left her in the morning. She has three Sunday School friends in her class this year so that is a great way to start things off.

We decided it was time to begin to teach the older girls about money and how it works so we started an allowance system. I found some great chore templates online and the girls had fun coloring them in and personalizing them. Their allowance is divided four ways - 10% to tithing, 30% to current spending, 30% to short term savings and the final 30% for long term savings. The short term savings is going to be used for the things that they want but are more expensive then what they receive each week. This is a great tool for teaching the value of a dollar and for saving up for what you want - something that is very hard to do in our credit frenzied society and something that we practice with great diligence. The long term savings is going to be for university. It might seem funny to have a four and six year old saving for school that is going to happen more then ten years from now, but children who have a financial interest in their own education tend to take that education more seriously and work harder. Once they have saved a bit of money, I am going to take them down to our financial adviser and have them turn over their money to be put into their RESP fund. The amount they are going to be contributing won't be much compared to what we contribute every month, but it will give them a sense of saving for something very big and important and make them feel like they are a part of the whole process.
